7th Edition Mtg

  • Step 1 of 5

Comparative planet logy approach for most of our study of thesolar system is the precise measurements allow us to ensure thatour clocks keep pace with the sun daily actions across the sky. Theessence of planetology lies in the idea that we can learn moreabout an individual world.

  • Step 2 of 5

    (a)

A sidereal day is defined as the time it takes any planetrevolves in its orbit around the local sky. In fact earth rotationis slow about 4 min in 24 hours. Sidereal means we measure the sametime irrespective of the star we choose. Solar day is based on thetime in which sun revolves around the local sky with circularorbits. Its exact average time is 24hrs. In fact it is 4 min longerthan compared to sidereal day.

  • Step 3 of 5

    (b)

When viewing from the full moon, the entire sunlit part of theearth can be seen. At crescent stage one part is brightly lit bythe sun and the other part is cradled dimly illuminated like almostfull earth. Moon 29.5 period is called synodic month but the infact actual rotation is 27.3 days which is called sidereal month. This is the actual time that takes Moon to complete an orbitrelative to the position of distant stars.

  • Step 4 of 5

    (c)

The time taken by Earth to complete one revolution is calledsidereal year. On the other hand we are having a calendar which isbased on the seasons from March equinox to next year March equinoxand this time period is termed as tropical year. The maindifference is 20 min between the sidereal year and tropical yearwhere it raises 26,000 year cycle axis of precession.

  • Step 5 of 5

    (d)

A planets sidereal period is defined the time the planet takesto orbit the sun. Usually different planets vary their timeposition to complete one revolution around the sun. For exampleJupiter takes 12 years to complete the one revolution in theirspecified orbits. On the other hand synodic period is the timewhere all the revolving planets are formed to be in same alignment. There were no time gap or delays differences between the siderealperiod and synodic period. Hence all the differences that were areexplained.
